There are lots of technical gothic metal bands that utilise banjos and elements of bluegrass. One of the several reasons it's the best style of metal.

Why? Because they sound like merry-go-round music, all of their songs are exactly the same (Korpiklaani basically have two songs - a fast one and a ballad) and really have not much to do with folk music except having folk instruments in their lineup. In my humble opinion of course.

@Harliquensfly: Korpiklaani, Ensiferum and Fintroll are indeed prime examples of cancer that poisoned folk metal in early 2000's and almost killed it recently. Try Skyclad, Cruachan, Arkona, Lumsk... Maybe even Subway to Sally and Schandmaul, and if you don't mind little bit of doom metal, I'd recommend Silent Stream of Godless Elegy. Nobody sounds quite like Eluveitie, so far they're the only band I know that succesfully mixed folk and melodeath.
