Adalgoth
Their rehearsal material is pure gold, August '94 recording in particular. I especially love how they've managed to forge their own distinctive style at the very start (there are some small traces of Carpathian Forest '93 demo, early Katatonia and maybe even Strid, but still very unique, it doesn't sound like anything else from that era) and its grimmer, harsher kind of coldness which "For all tid" sadly lacks due to production values. And the lower key gives it a special, almost doom-deathy kind of mood, more sorrowful compared to the album versions of these songs.

So they're releasing a cover compilation album? Bunch of lazy bastards. Wonder if it's the fault of the record company or the band themselves

That's a bonus, but yea all the albums up to Diaboli are still good IMO. After that it's already too cheesy, iirc.

stormblåst and for all tid are really good, and it's crazy how often I listen to other bands and can very clearly hear the dimmu burger influence

First two albums are nowadays actually underrated, although they were quite popular back then.

their newer albums are actually what got me into black metal funnily enough. nowadays I don't like them much and only like their old stuff. they'll still always have a special place in my heart though!

It wasn't received all that well though, and none of their albums had been for quite a few years. I get where you're coming from, but for me this band has a much better discography and record than they're given credit for, including Eonian, which I think is a banger album.

Maybe Swarming1182 meant underrated at metal scene. Overall Dimmu Borgir belongs to most recognized black metal bands ever, atleast here in Finland.

funnily enough the fact that dimmu borgir is always shat upon was what encouraged me to actually start enjoying them lol. At one point I was also in the same "this is just accessible pop metal !!" boat when I first gave them a listen long ago, but later on I started going into it for the cheesy dated over-the-top theatrics rather than the actual black metal aspect itself which made all the difference in my enjoyment.

The album Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia had a pure strong sound in 2001. Thanks to the new mix material, the drums have lost their echo and sound less noisy and more 3D. Nick Barker's playing has been taken to a new level. Choir, strings , keyboard themes, beautifully dominate the album constantly. It is unusual to hear this album in this form after 20 years, but absolutely no complaints.

Dust of Cold Memories is a nice treasure trove, especially the Kolbotn tapes. PEM remaster is a joke.

Love them or not i think they made big influence on Black metal and metal scene in general, and their sound was always unique. Recently i have re listen their discograpjy, and listened to later albums which i didnt listened, so here is my list from best to weakest albums 1) Spiritual Black Dimensions (1999) 2) For All Tid (1995) 3) Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (1997) 4) Puritanical Euphorical Misanthropia (2001) 5) Godless Savage Garden (1998) 6) Stormblast (1996) 7) Eonian (2018) 8) In Sorte Diaboli (2007) 9) Death Cult Armageddon (2003) 10) Abrahadabra (2010) Spiritual Black Dimensions will forever stay my favorite, special atmosphere, and Mustis keyboards are amazing, the lamest one is definetely Abrahadabra, Death Cult Armageddon has always been overrated, For All Tid is fantastic magical atmospheric work and Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is masterful Melodic Black Metal album, Eonian is good suprise for me, it has something.
