It’s taken a decade but I think I prefer this over Obscura now. It feels sacrilegious to say.

The more I listen to this album, the more I am convinced that this is their best release.

This album, along with Afterbirth's Four Dimensional Flesh, have shown me that there is so much beauty to be found in death metal. And from a band like Gorguts, whose compositions are frequently discordant and unsettling, it's a wonderful surprise.

best production of any modern death metal release? i'm thinking yes. every instrument is incredibly clear despite the complex mix, and it doesn't sacrifice dynamic range for the sake of loudness. btw, if you haven't heard it yet, check out the bass-and-drums-only mix colin put on his youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdQdwbgyqYg - i'm shocked at how many parts i thought were guitars are actually the bass. and i think i never really understood how much of an influence chris squire must be on colin's bass playing and especially on his bass tone until i heard this mix. if i'm understanding correctly, he gets this massive sound by using both a bass amp and a guitar amp. the bass-and-drums mix also allows some details in longstreth's playing to shine through that might not be super obvious on the album mix. it's an interesting piece of music in its own right, and it's especially interesting to listen to both mixes and compare them. beautiful stuff.

Yeah, this is a masterpiece. Anyone who's saying Gorguts have lost it recently must be listening to a different band, because everything they've released seems spellbinding to me.

I was afraid they had have given it all, but then they come out with this, and it's stunning how they have reached an even higher peak in songwriting maturity. There even is some influence from contemporary bands, like Ulcerate, yet this tops everything said band has ever released. The masters are back, I suppose.

It's a pretty dumb joke about the politically correct terminology for races. The term "coloured" used to be preferred by African-Americans but is now regarded as outdated and offensive, generally replaced by "African-American", "black", or "people of colour". That's pretty much it. To people who haven't followed the minutiae of American political discourse it will probably make no sense, and the fact that the question was even asked goes to show how much sense it will make to people not familiar with said details.

Funny how American conceptions of race & racism make almost zero sense once you step out of the United States

To each his own. I've been spinning this constantly of late and I'd say it's very worthy of the Gorguts name and represents an interesting evolution for the band. The increased use of dynamics, the ambient passages, the totally neo-classical (and awesome) "The Battle of Chamdo," the flawless production... IMO a terrific record. Considered Dead and The Erosion of Sanity are great, great death metal albums but at the end of the day they're just that: Death metal albums. Don't get me wrong, I love death metal and I love the first two Gorguts releases, but ever since Obscura, Luc/Gorguts has made music that transcends the "(technical) death metal" tag; Obscura is their whacked out, "Beefheart-does-metal" masterpiece, From Wisdom to Hate takes the dissonant and atonal riffing and applies it to more user-friendly compositions and Colored Sands adds the aforementioned dynamics and ambient touches to the mix. Great stuff that's miles above what 99% of other groups can do.

As I listen to it more and more, I'm not really into it. I find it boring, to be brutally honest. It's an okay album. I'll listen to their first couple of albums mostly.

"Is this supposed to be a concept album about Tibet?" Yes, it is. According to an interview, Luc read several books about the Tibetian people for a couple of years in order to know about the topics he was going to write about.

Definitely a step up from the last album. It's the counterpart to Obscura in that while Obscura relied heavily on intense dissonance, convoluted riffs and really broken sounding... everything, whilst retaining an order to it's chaos, this album relies on heavy atmosphere, a very darkly melodic one that retains it's dissonance. The riffs are still very chaotic but very beautiful, easily one of my favourite albums of the year.

To be fair to last.fm, it's not officially out yet, except as a digital release.
